The Introduction of Iridoids:

With advances in phytochemical research, many compounds with novel structures and outstanding activity have been identified. Iridoids are a class of natural compounds frequently encountered in angiosperms of the subclass Asteridae. They are frequently used as intermediates in the production of indole alkaloids, are well-known for their leishmanicidal properties. Iridoids comprise a large group of monoterpenoids, characterized by skeletons in which a six-membered ring, containing an oxygen atom, is fused to a cyclopentane ring (iridane skeleton). Biosynthesis of iridoids is basically made along the monoterpenoid part of the isopentenyl diphosphate pathways. Iridoids and secoiridoids are secondary metabolites found in terrestrial and marine flora and fauna, they are plant protectants.

Iridoids have been regarded as defense chemicals against herbivores and pathogens since iridoid glycosides generally have a bitter taste and have antifeedant and growth inhibitory activities against insects. Iridoids contribute to the sensory properties of many plants, providing distinct flavors and aromas. Beyond their importance in plants, iridoids have attracted significant attention in the field of medicine and natural products research. These compounds possess a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. Their ability to modulate various cellular processes and signaling pathways has made them valuable targets for drug discovery and development. Their unique chemical structures and biological activities make them valuable components in traditional medicine and potential candidates for the development of pharmaceuticals and functional foods.

Classification of Iridoids:

According to the integrity of the cyclopentane unit, it can be divided into two types: iridoid glycosides and secoiridoid glycosides. In addition, the dimer of iridoids called bis-iridoids and unglycosylated iridoids called non-glycosidic iridoids are also found in nature.

--Iridoid Glycosides: The iridoid glycosides C-1 are polyhydroxyl linked and polyglycoside formed, and most of them are β-d-glucoside.  Iridoid glycosides can be found in various plant parts, including leaves, stems, flowers, and roots. They are often responsible for the bitter taste and pharmacological effects of many medicinal plants.

--Secoiridoids Glycosides: Secoiridoids have many structural differences compared with the iridoid glycosides. Secoiridoid glycosides can be found in various plant species, including Oleaceae, Gentianaceae, and Apocynaceae. They exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective effects.

--Bis-Iridoids: In addition to the compounds, there exists a class of bis-iridoids in nature that are dimeric iridoids formed from the structures of two iridoids. These compounds have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities.  Bis-iridoids have been found in certain plant families, such as Apocynaceae and Rubiaceae. They have been studied for their potential pharmacological properties, including antitumor and antiviral activities.

--Non-Glycosidic Iridoids: A few iridoid compounds, called non-glycosidic iridoids, are also found in nature.  They exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and neuroprotective effects. These compounds have attracted significant attention in the field of natural products research and drug discovery. Researchers have isolated valtrate, 1-β-acevaltrate, and acevaltrate from Momordica charantia L.; these compounds did not contain glycosides.

Product Description:

Iridoids are a type of monoterpenoids found in a wide variety of plants and some animals. They are biosynthetically derived from 8-oxogeranial and are typically found in plants as glycosides, most often bound to glucose. Iridoids possess unique chemical structures and offer a multitude of potential applications in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and agriculture. Structurally, they are bicyclic cis-fused cyclopentane-pyrans. The iridoids produced by plants act primarily as a defense against herbivores or against infection by microorganisms. The variable checkerspot butterfly gets iridoids in its diet to act as a defense mechanism against avian predators. Humans and other mammals often perceive iridoids as having a deterrent, bitter taste.

Iridoids have gained significant attention for their remarkable biological activities. These compounds exhibit potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties, making them valuable candidates for drug discovery and development. Iridoid products of ALL Chemistry can be utilized in the formulation of dietary supplements, functional beverages, and fortified foods, offering consumers a natural and effective way to enhance their well-being. In addition, iridoids contribute to the sensory and therapeutic properties of skincare, hair care, and personal care products. These compounds possess anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, which can help protect the skin from environmental damage and promote a youthful appearance.
